Welcome back! Can I safely assume, since you are excellent humor scholars, that youâve taken the humor quotient test that I talked about in last weekâs video? If you havenât, go back to last weekâs post, then come back and join us!
If you have taken the humor quotient test, excellent! Now, youâre probably wondering what youâre supposed to do with the numbers that you got back. This is where some high school math comes in (I know, itâs been a while). What weâre going to do is graph those numbers, and then youâll be able to see where you lie in terms of appreciating and applying your humor.
If you find yourself in the bottom left quadrant, you might believe that humor isnât a crucial part of improving both your professional and personal life! Now, if this is where you landed on the grid, donât be discouragedâthere is always room for improvement no matter where you are on the graph! Thatâs right. Even if youâre numbers put you in the top right quadrant, you can still improve. Humor i...
Youâve heard me say it hundreds of times, but as I do with my family, Iâll keep repeating it until everyone gets how important it is: knowledge is power. But hereâs the thing, itâs not just the knowledge thatâs going to get you the power, itâs the application of the knowledge of the powerâsay that ten times fast!Â
Think of it this way if you see someone in need of CPR youâre not going to run up to them and tell them âI know how to do CPR!â thatâs not going to help them at all, and itâs definitely not going to make you the most popular person in the room. Itâs the same with humor (except its not life or death). You can say youâre funny all day long, but if your appreciation of humor trumps your ability to apply the humor, nothing is going to change.
Throughout the day seek out things that amuse you, and before you know it your brain is going to start recognizing the humor in everythingâand that, my friend is going to change your life.Â
So, how do you know if youâre applying your h...
Or better yet, do you think you have a sense of humor? These are important questions to think about when youâre about to set off on a humor journey. Maybe you think youâre really funny, or maybe you wish that you could just get one laugh out of your kids now and then (corny jokes might not land so well on the younger generation). Wherever you might be on your humor journey, itâs important to know that you can always change or better your humor abilities.
Like Iâve been saying for years: itâs more important to see funny than to be funny.
Not all humor has to be comedy, and the main thing to focus on is your ability to tap into your appreciation of humor and the things that amuse you because thatâs whatâs going to cause you the most joy. The idea of doing this is what I call intentionally looking for humor in your everyday life. Itâs a perfect example of how to be able to see funny rather than just being funny. Being mindful of what bri...
As I chatted with Brett in his office, several of his staff walked by the door and giggled. One of the young women leaned into the doorway and said, âDonât be late for your appointment!â and winked.
He waved at her and laughed, saying, âDonât worry. Iâm not backing out!â
He looked at me and laughed. âItâs not what youâre probably thinking! A couple months ago I told my staff that if they could go an entire month without an injury or a safety violation, Iâd shave my head! At first I was just joking around. I said it more out of exasperation than seriousness. But the staff pounced on the idea. Before you know it, for the first time in ages, they hit the target. As soon as that happened, they came to me and set up a date to ceremoniously shave my head! Between you and me, my first thought was âOh crap! Iâm going to look like a dork!â
âBut then I realized Iâd achieved two things: Most importantly, we met an important safety target. Thatâs huge. But the thing that I hadnât expected was t...
A bunch of guys are playing football in a park. The ball is hiked. The quarterback steps back to throw. The receiverâan old woman!âshuffles down the field. Ninety-year-old comedic actress Betty White nearly catches the ball, but suddenly sheâs brutally tackled. One of her teammates teases, âHey man, youâre playing like Betty White out there!â Sheâs given a Snickers Bar, which transforms her back into his proper male form. The tagline: âYouâre not you when youâre hungry.â
It became one of the most talked-about commercials in Super Bowl history.
Ask folks if they watch the Super Bowl and youâll often hear, âI just watch the game for the commercials.â People remember and talk about these ads! Especially the funny ones.
This is why leaders at companies like Frito-Lay, PepsiCo, Allstate Insurance, Reebok, McDonaldâs, and Budweiser pay $4.5 million for 30-second spots, most of which are humorous. Why do they do this? Because they understand that FUNNY MEANS MONEY.
According to Mark Levit...
âIâm trying to imagine you with a personality.â
âThis isnât an office. Itâs Hell with fluorescent lighting.â
âDonât bother me. Iâm livinâ the dream.â
Sarcasm. Gotta love it, donât ya? Used for comic effect and dry criticism throughout the agesâby us common folks and by the famous.
Oscar Wilde observed: âSome cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.â
Stephen Bishop said: âI feel so miserable without you, itâs almost like having you here.â
Mark Twain once quipped: âI didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it.â
Sarcasm. You hear it nearly every day, from all kinds of people, in all kinds of situations.
[Yeah, we all knowâor think we knowâexactly what sarcasm is. But for the meticulous among you, hereâs the precise definition, according to Websterâs Dictionary: âThe use of words that mean the opposite of what you really want to sayâespecially to insult someone, to show irritation, or to be funny.â]
Sometimes sarcasm works, and so...
âTreat your love life like itâs the ultimate romantic comedy; laugh a lot and kiss when the credits roll.â
- Gregory Godek, author of 1001 Ways To Be Romantic
Stand-up comic Michael Elizondo sat in the doctorâs exam room waiting to be seen. When the doctor walked in, he was taken aback by her beauty. âCome here often?â he quipped. She laughed. And as the saying goes⌠they lived happily ever after.
When it comes to what weâre looking for in a mate, a sense of humor ranks as a must-have for both sexes. That being said, men and women are looking for slightly different outcomes when it comes to a sense of humor in a soulmate.
Women are looking for someone who will make them laugh. Men, on the other hand, are looking for someone to laugh at their jokes. According to numerous studies, guys who can make a woman laugh are seen as more attractive. And guys feel affirmed and appreciated by a woman who laughs at his jokes.
Humor and romance arenât just for Valentineâs Day. The benefits are so ...
Humor is a valuable leadership tool because it opens up the avenues of communication between you and your employees, as well as between you and your customers.
When you've demonstrated that you're someone who appreciates humor and that it's acceptable to laugh with you, you're also showing others that you can be approached with other types of messages. People will feel freer sharing challenges and even bad news with you.
This doesn't really sound like a good thing, does it? If leading with laughter results in an increase of people having frank, direct conversations with you about less than wonderful news, some of you are saying, sign me up for Club Super Serious. Who wants to open the floodgates to every complaint and concern?
Good leaders do. Conventional wisdom may say ignorance is bliss, but conventional wisdom has never been blindsided by the fact they have a toxic employee who's actions are going to inevitably lead to expensive, reputation-ruining litigation; conventional wisdo...

Listen to Your Team
âThere are leaders who only want people to listen to them. A better approach is to do more listening. Make decisions based on the input of your team members. Solicit multiple viewpoints and have them present you with the pros and cons before ...
A sense of humor and the ability to laugh are powerful leadership tools. Below are 5 reasons why YOU should add humor and laughter to your Leadership Toolbox.
1. Leaders who laugh are healthier leaders.
Being in charge is stressful. The rates of heart disease, high blood pressure, and other stress-driven health complaints are much higher among leaders than among people who aren't in such stressful roles. Laughter is an all-natural, drug-free way to alleviate stress. When you're less stressed, you make better decisions: laughter can make you a better business strategist!
2. Leaders who laugh are better negotiators.
Humor puts the common bonds of experience and insight individuals have squarely in the spotlight. This strengthens the relationship. This is important when you're negotiating. Most leaders prefer to have negotiations where both parties feel like they're walking away a winner. Knowing what you have in common with the other party and what's important to them is a critical c...
